Contradictions of Jefferson He wanted limited government vs greatly expanding the US. “All men created equal” vs believed African Americans were mentally inferior to whites. Sally hemming affair. Disliked but refused to end it. Wolf by the ear’s. 1808: importation of slavery banned
Critisms of Jefferson’s administration He wanted to cut the military budget which would make them defenseless. Abolished all internal taxes. All revenue came from imports.
Embargo act 1807 Jefferson: US law stopping all trade with foreign nations. Mostly Britain and France. It was done to pressure them to respect the US shipping rights
Result of Embargo act It did not work. It severely damaged the American economy and caused smuggling
War of 1812 President was James Madison (1809-1817). Cause of war was British impressment of US sailors. War took place on the high seas, south and northwest of US. US military was tiny but professional organization
Northwest US invades Canada through Ontario thrown back. Natives attack western settlements. Tecumseh (Shawnee) and native confederation. William Henry Harrison and battle of tippecanoe (1811). Tecumseh killed at battle of Thames (1813)
High seas British blockade the eastern seaboard. Battle of Lake Erie, US captured 6 British ships.
South 1814- British send veterans from Napoleonic wars to invade US. British burned down the White House. Battle of fort McHenry: British withdrawal after failing to take port. Battle of New Orleans Andrew Jackson annihilates British.
War of 1812 in perspective American confidence at an all time high. Last hurrah for natives east of Mississippi. Rise of Andrew Jackson. Rise of the military profession
