Acropolis Is a hill in the center of Athens, and the Parthenon is located there.
Agora A Greek marketplace.
City-State Is a Greek polis. An area that is a town surrounded by farms ruled different types of governments throughout Greek history. Initially ruled by a king.
Pericles He is considered Athen's greatest leader. He created the Delian League. He took Athens into the Golden Age.
Aristocracy Is the rule by a privileged group of people, usually the upper class of wealth and position.
Monarchy A form of government which a single person inherits the power (a king).
Polis Is a "fortress" originally. But came to mean the city that grew up inside the fortress and the surrounding farms and nearby lands.
Democracy A form of government in which citizens rule themselves.
Citizen Is a person who owes loyalty to a particular country and receives protection in return.
Helot Is a slave in Sparta.
Tyrant Is a ruler that seized power by force.
Oligarchy Ruling power in the hands of a few.
Cleisthenes He is an Athenian democratic reformer who gave support to the common people and he broke down the power of the noble families.
Lycurgus He is the law giver who established the Spartan form of government. He wanted Sparta to be strong enough to defend all its enemies and control its slaves.
Solon An Athenian ruler who made Draco's laws less harsh. He ended the practice of enslaving those who could not pay their debt.
Parthenon Is a temple built on the Acropolis in the center of Athens. It has beautiful marble columns and painted sculptures.
Epic Is a long poem that describes the deeds of heroes.
Homer Is the poet who wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey.
Draco Is the Athenian ruler who tried to make reforms in the city-states. He organized laws by putting them into a written code.
Hellenistic It is the mixing of Eastern and Western culture which formed a new culture.
