Change Over time Vocabulary Quiz

TermDefinition
Species A group of similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce fertile offspring
Adaptation A trait that helps an organism survives and reproduces
Mutation An error that occurs when copying DNA, resulting in a different trait being shown in the offspring
Evolution The gradual change in a species over time
Natural Selection The process by which individuals are better adapted to their environment
Scientific Theory A well tested concept that explains a wide range of observations
Variation Any differences between individuals of the same species
Homologous Structures Similar structure among organisms but serves a different purpose eg. human arm and horse leg
Analogous Structures Different structure among organisms but serve the same purpose eg. insect wing and bird wing
Vestigial Structures Structures that are present in animals that are no longer used
Branching Tree/Cladogram Diagram that shows how scientist think different groups of organism are related
Fossil The preserved remains or traces of an organism that lived in the past
Fossil Record The millions of fossils that scientists have collected
Related Dating To determine the age of a fossil based on its surroundings
Absolute Dating Process to determine an exact age of fossils (uses chemicals and looks at how rocks decay)
Extinct No members of the species are still alive
