private bill A bill dealing with individual people or places.
public bill A bill dealing with general matters and applies to entire nation
joint resolution A resolution passed in the same form by both houses.
simple resolution Statement adopted to cover matters affecting only one house of Congress.
Rider Provision included in a bill on a subject other than the one covered.
concurrent resolution Cover matters requiring action of House and Senate on which a law is not needed.
Hearing A session which a committee listens to testimony from people interested in a bill.
Veto Rejection of a bill by the President.
Pocket veto President kills a bill passed during last 10 days Congress is in session.
Tax Money that people and businesses pay to government.
closed rule Rule forbids members of Congress to offer amendments to bill from the floor.
open rule Rule permits floor debate and addition of amendments to the bill.
appropriation Approval of government spending.
Authorization bill Sets up federal program and specifies how much money is appropriated for the program.
Appropriations Bill A proposed law to authorize spending money.
intrest group People who share goals and organize to influence government and policy.
Lobbyist Paid representative of interest group who contact government officials on their behalf.
Lobbying Direct contact made by lobbyist to persuade government officials.
Casework Work a lawmaker does to help constituents with problems.
Pork barrel legislation Laws passed by Congress to appropriate money for local federal projects.
Logrolling Agreement by two or more lawmakers to support each other’s bills.
