Term Defintion
Cell the fundamental structural, functional, and biological unit of all living organisms
Osmosis the passive movement of water molecules across a semipermeable membrane from a region of lower solute concentration to higher solute concentration to equalize concentrations
Cell Theory a fundamental biological principle stating that all living organisms are composed of one or more cells, cells are the basic unit of structure and function in life, and all cells arise from pre-existing, living cells
Cell Wall a rigid, protective outer layer located outside the cell membrane in plants, fungi, algae, and bacteria, providing structural support, shape, and protection against osmotic stress
Cell Membrane a dynamic, semipermeable lipid bilayer that surrounds all cells, acting as a barrier to separate the cytoplasm from the extracellular environment
Nucleus the central, membrane-bound organelle in eukaryotic cells containing DNA, or the positively charged center of an atom containing protons and neutrons
Organelle specialized, membrane-bound structures within eukaryotic cells that function like "little organs" to maintain cellular life through compartmentalized processes
Ribosome essential, non-membrane-bound molecular machines found in all living cells that synthesize proteins by translating messenger RNA (mRNA) into polypeptide chains
Nucleic Acid essential macromolecules that store and transmit genetic information, directing protein synthesis and cellular activities
Selectively Permeable a biological or synthetic barrier that allows specific molecules and ions to pass through while blocking others
Cytoplasm the jelly-like substance filling cells, enclosed by the plasma membrane and excluding the nucleus in eukaryotes, primarily composed of cytosol, organelles, and inclusions
Mitochondria specialized organelles known as the "powerhouse of the cell," producing over 90% of a cell's energy as adenosine triphosphate (ATP) via cellular respiration

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
