Waves
The study of waves and their properties
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| wave | move one's hand to and fro in greeting or as a signal |
| mechanical wave | waves that require a medium in order to transfer energy away from their source |
| medium | an agency or means of doing something. |
| transverse wave | a wave vibrating at right angles to the direction of its propagation. |
| longitudinal wave | a wave vibrating in the direction of propagation. |
| sound | vibrations that travel through the air or another medium and can be heard when they reach a person's or animal's ear./ sound produced by continuous and regular vibrations, as opposed to noise./ emit or cause to emit sound. |
| amplify | increase the volume of (sound), especially using an amplifier. |
| frequency | the rate at which something occurs or is repeated over a particular period of time or in a given sample. |
| wavelength | It is the distance a wave travels before the next wave cycle starts. |
| pitch | the quality of a sound governed by the rate of vibrations producing it; the degree of highness or lowness of a tone. |
