Waves

the study of waves and their properties

TermDefinition
wave a disturbance, oscillation, or vibration that travels through space and time, transferring energy from one location to another without transferring matter
mechanical wave disturbances or oscillations that transfer energy through a physical medium (solid, liquid, or gas) without transporting matter
medium a substance—solid, liquid, gas, or plasma—that carries or propagates energy, waves, or signals from one location to another
transverse wave a type of wave where the disturbance or oscillation occurs perpendicularly (at a right angle) to the direction of energy transfer
longitudinal wave a mechanical wave where particles of the medium vibrate parallel to the direction of energy transfer, creating alternating regions of high-density compression and low-density rarefaction
sound wave a wave of compression and rarefaction, by which sound is propagated in an elastic medium such as air.
amplify increase the volume of (sound), especially using an amplifier.
frequency the rate at which a vibration occurs that constitutes a wave, either in a material (as in sound waves), or in an electromagnetic field (as in radio waves and light), usually measured per second.
wavelength the distance between successive crests of a wave, especially points in a sound wave or electromagnetic wave.
pitch a persuasive presentation (sales pitch), the highness/lowness of sound, or throwing/launching something

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
