Waves
The study of waves and their properties
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Wave | A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter. |
| Mechanical Wave | A mechanical wave is a wave that travels only through matter. |
| Meduim | wave can also travel through meduim |
| Transverse Wave | Transverse Wave is wave in which the disturbance is a perppendicular to the direction the wave travels |
| Longitudinal Wave | Longitudinal Wave causes the particles in a medium to move parallel to the direction that the wave travels |
| Sound Wave | A Sound Wave is a Longitudinal Wave that can travel only through matter. |
| frequency | waves have another property called |
| wavelength | between one point on a wave to the same point on the next wave. |
| Amplitude | the maximum displacement or distance moved by a point on a wave measured from its equilibrium (resting) position |
| Pitch | Pitch is directly proportional to frequency; as frequency increases, pitch increases. |
