TermDefinition
Capital The accumulated wealth and physical machinery like the factories and tools to invest in production.
Corporation A new type of “super-business” authorized by the government that acted like a single person, but was owned by many different investors.
Assembly Line A manufacturing process where a product moves along a conveyor belt from one worker to the next.
Interchangeable parts Making many of the same parts so that if something breaks, you can just switch it out.
Standard of living It refers to the level of comfort, wealth and basic necessities that was available to people.
Urbanization The mass movement of people from the countryside to towns and cities to work in new factories.
Entrepreneur A business leader who took big financial risks to turn new inventions into mass-produced products.
Utilitarianism Was a philosophy that aimed to fix the massive social problems of that era.
Birmingham A city in England that was the main place of invention and manufacturing.
Stock It is a small piece of ownership in a company.
Suffrage The right to vote in elections.
Tenement a 5-7 story apartment building in a city that was built fast and cheaply to house all of the workers.
Turnpikes They were built on private roads where travelers had to pay a fee to use them.
Canals Man made rivers built to connect cities and factories to transfer goods.

Smelting Using extreme heat and fuel to melt raw rock to separate pure metal from impurities.
Business Monopoly When one company bought or crushed all its competitors to become the only seller of a product.
Business Cartel A secret or formal agreement between several large companies in the same industry to stop competing with each other instead work together to control production.
Agricultural Revolution- how did it cause it? It caused it because it created a food surplus and freed up labor.
Enclosure Movement Where wealthy landowners fenced off “common” land and made it their private property.
