the study of waves and their purpose.

| Mechanical Waves | A Mechanical Wave is a wave that travels only though matter. |
| Medium | A material in which a wave travels is called a medium. |
| Traverse wave | A transverse wave is a wave which the disturbance perpendicular to the direction the waves travel. |
| Longitudinal Wave | longitudinal wave causes the particles in a medium to move parallel to the direction that the waves travel. |
| Sound Wave | A sound Wave is a longitudial wave that can travel only through matter. |
| Amplitude | The Amplitude of a wave is the maximum distance that the wave moves from its rest position. |
| Frequency | The frequency of a wave is the number of times the pattern repeats in a given time. |
| Wave length | The distance between the point on a wave to the same point on the next wave. |
| Pitch | The perception of how high or low a sound seems is pitch. |
