Infection control
| Term | Definition |

| Contagious Disease/ Communicable Disease | When a disease is capable of spreading from one person to another. |
| The five types of potentially harmful organisms | Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi, Parasites, Biofilms |
| Contamination | The presence, or reasonably anticipated presence, of blood or other potentially infectious materials on an items surface, or visible debris or residues such as dust, hair, and skin. |
| Decontamination | The removal of blood or other potentially infectious materials on an items surface and the removal of visible debris or residues such as dust, hair, and skin. |
| Diagnosis | Determination of the nature of a disease from its symptoms and/or diagnostic tests. |
| Germs | Nonscientific synonym for disease-producing organisms. |
| Occupational Disease | Illness resulting from conditions associated with employment, such as prolonged and repeated overexposure to certain products or ingrediants. |
| Toxins | Various poisonous substances produced by some microorganisms (bacteria and viruses) |
| Bacteria | Single-celled microorganisms that have both plant and animal characteristics. |
| Microorganism | Any organism of submicroscopic or microscopic size. |
| Nonpathogenic | Non harmful or harmless organism |
| Pathogenic | Harmful organism. |
| Inflammation | A condition in which the body tissue reacts to injury, irritation or infection Inflammation is characterized by heat, pain, and/or swelling. |
| Pus | A fluid containing white blood cells, bacteria, and dead cells. this is a by-product of the infectious process. |
| local infection | An infection confined to one particular part of the body, such as a pimple or abscess. |
| Systemic Infection | An infection where the pathogen has spread throughout the body, rather than staying in one area or organ. |
| Mycobacterium | Large family of bacteria that is often found in soil or water. |
| Virus | A submicroscopic particle that infects and resides in the cells of a biological organism. |
| Bloodborne Pathogens | Disease- causing microorganisms that are carried in the body by blood or body fluids. |
| Fungi | Are single-celled organisms that grow in irregular masses that include molds, mildews and yeasts. |
| Tinea Barbae | Also known as "barbers itch". A person with tinea barbae may have deep inflamed or noninflamed patches of skin on the face or the nape of the neck. |
| Ringworm | A fungal infection of the skin that appears in circular lesions. |
