Unit 8: Weathering
Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| weathering | the natural, in place breakdown of rocks, minerals, and soils on Earth’s surface caused by physical, chemical, and biological processes |
| physical weathering | the process of breaking down rocks, minerals, and soils into smaller pieces without changing their chemical composition |
| abrasion | the mechanical process of wearing, grinding, or scraping away surfaces through friction and impact, caused by moving particles in wind, water, or ice |
| chemical weathering | breaks down rocks by altering their molecular structure through chemical reactions |
| oxidation | a type of chemical weathering where metallic minerals within rocks, especially iron, react with oxygen and water to form oxides |
| acid precipitation | a form of accelerated chemical weathering where precipitation (rain, snow, fog) containing high levels of sulfuric and nitric acids |
| erosion | the geological process of wearing away and transporting soil, rock, and sediment from the Earth’s surface, primarily driven by water, wind, ice, and gravity |
| deposition | he geological settling of sediments |
| floodplain | A floodplain is a generally flat or low-lying area of land adjacent to a river, stream, lake, or ocean |
| delta | a landform created by deposited sediment at a river's mouth |
| alluvial fan | alluvial fans form on land at mountain bases with coarser, angular sediment |
| groundwater | water located beneath the Earth's surface |
| shoreline | the line along which a large body of water meets the land. |
| beach | a strip of land covered with sand |
| sandbar | a natural underwater ridge |
| barrier island | a long, narrow, offshore deposit of sand and sediment that runs parallel to the mainland coast |
| dune | a mound or ridge of sand or other loose sediment formed by the wind |
| loess | a fine-grained, porous, and yellowish-brown soil formed by the wind-blown accumulation of silt-sized sediment |
| glacier | a slowly moving mass or river of ice |
| glacial drift | a general geological term for all rock material ranging from boulders and gravel to sand and clay transported and deposited by glaciers or their meltwater |
| creep | the slow, permanent deformation of solid materials under long-term, constant stress, often exacerbated by high temperatures |
| rockfall | a descent of loose rocks. |
| landslide | the sliding down of a mass of earth or rock from a mountain or cliff. |
| mudflow | a fluid or hardened stream or avalanche of mud. |
| mountain | a large natural elevation of the earth's surface rising abruptly from the surrounding level; a large steep hill. |
| lake | a large body of water surrounded by land. |
| river | a large natural stream of water flowing in a channel to the sea, a lake, or another such stream. |
| coastline | the outline of a coast, especially with regard to its shape and appearance. |
