Waves
The study of waves and their porperties
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| wave | A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter. |
| mechanical wave | A mechanical wave is a wave that travels only through matter. mechanical wave can travel through solids, liquids, andgases, but not through a vacuum. |
| medium | Transverse Waves Two types of mechanical wave are transverse waves and longitudinal waves. |
| transverse wave | A Transverse Waves is a wave which the disturbance is perpendicular to the direction |
| longitudinal wave | longitudinal wave causes the particles in a medium to move parallel to the direction the wave travels. |
| sound wave | sound wave is a longitudinal wave that can travel only through matter. |
| amplitude | amplitude of a wave is the maximum distance that the wave moves from its rest position. |
| Wavelength | longitudinal waves are measured from one compression to the next compression or from one rarefaction to the rarefaction |
| frequency | frequency of a wave is the number of times the pattern repeat in given time |
