Photosynthesis & CR

QuestionAnswer
Autotroph An organism that makes its own food using energy from the sun or chemicals. Plants are autotrophs.
Chlorophyll The green pigment in plant cells that captures light energy from the sun. It gives plants their green color.
Chloroplast The organelle in plant cells where photosynthesis happens. It contains chlorophyll and is where plants make their own food.
Cytoplasm The jelly-like substance inside a cell that fills the space between the cell membrane and the nucleus. Organelles float in it.
Heterotroph An organism that cannot make its own food and must eat other organisms to survive. Animals are heterotrophs.
Mitochondria The organelle in cells that breaks down food to release energy. It is the "powerhouse" of the cell.
Photosynthesis The process plants use to make their own food using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. It happens in the chloroplasts.
Products The substances made at the end of a chemical reaction. In photosynthesis, the products are glucose and oxygen.
Raw Materials/Reactants The substances you start with at the beginning of a chemical reaction. In photosynthesis, the raw materials are sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.
Cellular Respiration The process cells use to break down glucose and release energy. It happens in the mitochondria and provides energy for the cell to use.
Stomata Tiny pores on the underside of plant leaves that open and close. They allow carbon dioxide to enter the plant and oxygen to exit.
