Cell Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell | the fundamental structural, functional, and biological unit of all living organisms |
| Osmosis | the spontaneous net movement of solvent molecules (usually water) through a semipermeable membrane from a region of lower solute concentration (hypotonic) to a region of higher solute concentration (hypertonic). |
| Cell Theory | a fundamental, universally accepted, three-part scientific principle stating that all living organisms are composed of one or more cells, cells are the basic structural/functional units of life, and all cells arise from pre-existing cells. |
| Cell Wall | a rigid or flexible, non-living outer layer located outside the cell membrane in plant, fungal, algal, and most bacterial cells |
| Cell Membrane | a thin, flexible, semipermeable barrier surrounding all living cells, separating the cytoplasm from the external environment |
| Nucleus | the central, most vital part of a system, most commonly referring to the membrane-bound organelle in eukaryotic cells containing DNA, or the dense, positively charged center of an atom composed of protons and neutrons |
| Organelle | a specialized, often membrane-bound, subunit within a eukaryotic cell that performs a specific, vital function, acting much like an organ does for the body |
| Ribosome | a vital cellular machine, made of RNA and protein, that synthesizes proteins by translating messenger RNA (mRNA) into chains of amino acids |
