Early Americas

TermDefinition
MAIZE — A type of grain also called corn; it was a main food grown and eaten by many Indigenous peoples in the Americas.
ISTHMUS — A narrow strip of land that connects two larger land areas and has water on both sides.
OLMEC — An early civilization in Mesoamerica known for carving large stone heads and influencing later cultures.
MESOAMERICA — A region in the Americas (including parts of Mexico and Central America) where many early civilizations developed.
PENINSULA — A piece of land mostly surrounded by water but still connected to a larger land area.
CHAVÍN — An ancient Andean culture in South America known for building temples and for its religious art.
YUCATAN PENINSULA — A large peninsula in southeastern Mexico that separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean Sea and was home to Maya cities
ROCKY MOUNTAINS — A major mountain range in western North America that stretches from Canada into the United States.
PLAINS — Wide, flat areas of land with few trees that are often good for farming and grazing animals.
GULF OF MEXICO — A large body of water bordered by the United States, Mexico, and Cuba; it connects to the Atlantic Ocean.
RAIN FOREST — A dense forest with heavy rainfall, many kinds of plants and animals, and layers of trees that create a shaded environment.
ANDES MOUNTAINS — The long mountain range along the western edge of South America where many ancient Andean cultures lived.
