TermDefinition
Abdominal aortic aneurysm Weakened area in the descending aorta causing a ballooned bulge in the arterial wall. Weakened area is at risk of rupturing causing life threatening internal bleeding and death.
American Association of Medical Assistants Professional organization that certifies MA's and works to maintain professional standards in the medical assisting profession.
Advance beneficiary notice A notice given to Medicare beneficiaries to convey that Medicare is not likely to provide coverage for a specific diagnosis or treatment
Americans with Disabilities Act Act forbidding discrimination against people because of a physical or mental handicap
Attention deficit disorder Range of behavioral disorders occurring primarily in children, including such symptoms of poor concentration, hyperactivity, and impulsivity
Admission, discharge, transfer Patient is admitted into a Healthcare facility. Patient is released from a Healthcare facility. Patient has been moved to a new facility or a new location in the facility
Atrial fibrillation Common atrial dysrhythmia that causes speedy multiple electrical signals that fire rapidly from different areas in the atria rather than from the SA node
Alpha fetoprotein A protein produced by the fetus and secreted into the mothers blood that can indicate neural tube defects (abnormalities is the brain and spinal cord) in the unborn child
Alanine aminotransferase One of the enzymes that help the liver convert food into energy; high levels of these enzymes can be a sign that the liver is injured or irritated, and the enzymes are leaking out of the liver cells
Aspartate aminotransferase Liver enzyme that indicates liver damage
Ampule A small, sealed container, usually glass but can be plastic, which contains a sterile liquid (usually medication)
Aqueous Containing water or like water, watery
Accounts payable Money owed by a business to a patient or other entity; the practice's expenses
Acetaminophen An OTC medication used as a pain reliever and fever reducer
Activated partial thromboplastin time Blood coagulation test that measures how long it takes your blood to form a clot
Accounts receivable Income or money owed to a business (typically by patients or insurance companies)
Autism spectrum disorder A developmental disorder or variable severity that is characterized by difficulties in social interaction and communication and by restricted or repetitive patterns of thought and behavior
Auscultation The process of listening to body sounds
