what are introns? intervening sequences that are removed when the primary transcript is processed to give the mature RNA product
what are exons? sequences retained in the mature RNA product
what is pre-mRNA? direct product of transcription that contains introns and exons
what is mature mRNA? fully processed mRNA product, removing introns and including the 5' cap and 3' poly-A-tail
what is an overlapping gene? sequence of DNA that can encode more than one polypeptide. two proteins can be generated from a single gene
what is alternative splicing? switches in the process of connecting the exons in genes, resulting in alternative proteins
why does alternative splicing occur? proteins such as activators and repressors can bind to the RNA and either inhibit or promote the spliceosome's recognition of splice sites
when does alternative splicing occur? when the cell needs change during gene expression
