Salicylates are a class of medications derived from salicylic acid, primarly used for pain relief, inflammation reduction, and fever managment.
Prostaglandin - hormones - like substance that play crucial role in various bodily functions: - Regulating Inflammation - Modulating Pain - Controlling Blood flow - Inducing Labor - Facilitating Healing
What some examples of medications in the drug class Salicylates: - Aspirin - Ecotrin - Bufferin - All are pain medications that are enteric coded and cannot be crushed.
Action of Salicylates: - Analgesic (to relieve pain) - Antipyretic (reduces fever and alleviate discomfort associated with high body temperature) - Anti - Inflammatory (reduces imflammation)
What medication can you give to a stroke patient? - Aspirin
What are salicylates used for? - relief of mild to moderate pain - reducing elevated body temperature - treating inflammatory conditions (osteoarthritis, rheumatic fever) - reduces risk of TIA and stroke - prevents platelet aggregation.
Precautions & Contraindications - Never give to a child under 18 years old with viral infections like influenza or chickenpox.
