| prevailing (adj) | the idea or feeling that is the strongest (There were two possible answers on the test, so I chose the prevailing choice) |
| indicate (v) | to point or point out (Flagging a question on a test can indicate that you need to come back later) |
| tone (n) | the way authors express their personal opinions about themselves, the content, subject, and/or the audience (An authors tone can help show how they feel about a certain topic) |
| mood (n) | the emotions a reader feels when reading the excerpt (The spooky story gave a scary and creepy mood) |
| purpose (n) | the reason the text exists. It is what is the author or speaker hopes to accomplish by writing the text (The purpose of the climate change poem was to spread awareness about what is happening to the earth. |
| perspective (n) | a way of thinking about and understanding something (Looking at a story from a different perspective can change the way you feel about it) |
| audience (n) | those who actively engage with texts, interpret the texts according to their own knowledge and experiences, and use the texts to accomplish their own purposes (Finding your audience before writing an argument can help you strengthen your claim) |
| expository techniques (n) | the elements an author uses that focus on central idea, provide evidence and examples, and present logical conclusion (ex.: facts, statistics, testimony, text, data, main ideas, etc. ) (Using expository techniques can help strengthen your essay) |

| adaptation (n) | a story or work that is base on an older story, they often include changes to the original story (The film "A Christmas Carol" was an adaptation of the original play by Charles Dickens) |
| parenthetical citations (n) | citations are brief references within the text that provide readers with the source of the information. Parenthetical means the information is included in parenthesis (The article used parenthetical citations to show where it got its information from) |
| works cited (n) (We needed a works cited page at the end of the argument to show that our argument was reliable) | A works cited page is a list at the end of the paper or text that shows all the sources that were used to find the information. It gives credit to the authors and helps readers know where the facts came from |

| stillness (n) | absence of noise or motion (The stillness in the haunted house was creepy) |
| deserted (adj) | abandoned; empty (The deserted ship at the bottom of the ocean was covered in tons of sea life |
| emissions (n) | to release, discharge, or sending out of something into the air or environment (The emissions from the cars caused the air quality to drop drastically |
| emit (v) | to produce and discharge something (cars emit many greenhouse gasses that contribute to global warming) |
| activist (n) | a person who campaigns to bring about political or social change (The climate activist was trying to change people's views on global warming) |
