Gastroenteritis can be caused by Viral or bacterial/parasite. (E. coli, rotavirus)
Sx of gastroenteritis N/V/D, lethargic, bloody stool, ab pain, loss of appetite
Viral gastroenteritis mgmt sx relief, hydration, easy to digest foods, avoid dry/greasy/spicy
Bacterial/parasite mgmt Abx, hydration, easy to digest, avoid dairy, greasy, spicy. Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast
Hand foot mouth is caused by Enterovirus
How is hand foot mouth spread? Through direct and indirect contact of oral and respiratory secretions, or fecal/oral route via diaper changes.
Sx of hand foot mouth Fever, painful oral ulcers with red border and a white/grey inside, vesicular causes rash on hands and feet
Mgmt of hand foot mouth Sx relief, hydration, antipyretics, comfort measures, nonsteroidal creams, tylenol/motrin
What precautions for hand foot mouth Contact precautions
What precautions for varicella Airborne
How is varicella transmitted Inhalation of aerosolized virus causes transmission. They must be in a negative pressure room.
Sx of varicella Skin rash, blisters on chest ack and face, scabs then crusts over.
Mgmt of varicella Sx relief, antipyretics, hydration, popsicles, rest, alert school.
When can they return to school with varicella? Can't go back until fever free for 24 hours, and all blisters have crusted over and scabed(1wk)
