| phlebotomy | The process of drawing blood from a person. |
| components of blood | The main parts of blood: plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. |
| leukocytes | White blood cells; they help fight infection |
| erythrocytes | Red blood cells; they carry oxygen around the body. |
| plasma | The yellow liquid part of blood that carries nutrients, hormones, and waste. |
| thrombocytes | Tiny cells that help blood clot to stop bleeding |
| hemoglobin | A protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. |
| sickle cell disease | A genetic condition where red blood cells are shaped like sickles and don’t carry oxygen well. |
| leukemia | Cancer of the blood or bone marrow that affects white blood cells. |
| hematocrit | The percentage of blood made up of red blood cells. |
| anemia | When someone has too few red blood cells or low hemoglobin, causing tiredness and weakness. |
| polycythemia | When someone has too many red blood cells, making blood thicker. |
| canula | A small tube placed into a vein to give fluids or take blood. |
| complete blood count | A blood test that checks red cells, white cells, platelets, and hemoglobin. |
| basic metabolic panel | A blood test that checks things like sugar, electrolytes, and kidney function |
| lipid panel | A test that measures cholesterol and fats in the blood. |
| saturated fat | Unhealthy fat (often in fast food and fried foods) that can raise cholesterol. |
