Weathering and Erosion

TermDefinition
weathering the natural process by which atmospheric and environmental agents, such as wind, rain, and temperature changes, disintegrate and decompose rocks.
physical weathering the mechanical breakdown of rocks into smaller pieces is caused by natural processes and does not change the chemical composition of the rocks material.
abrasion the process by which rock is reduced in size by the scraping action of other rocks driven by water, wind, and gravity.
chemical weathering the chemical breakdown and decomposition of rocks by natural processes in the environment.
oxidation a chemical reaction in which a material combines with oxygen to form new material
acid precipitation the action or process of precipitating a substance from a solution.
erosion natural process where rocks, soil, and other materials are worn away and moved from one place to another by natural forces
deposition the process where a substance changes from a gas directly into a solid, or where sediments are added to landforms.
floodplain a flat or gently sloping area of land next to a river or stream
delta a landform that forms at the mouth of a river where it meets a larger body of water
alluvial fan a triangle-shaped deposit of soil and rocks that forms when a fast-moving river
groundwater groundwater forms when rain or surface water seeps into the ground
shoreline the boundary or edge where the land meets a body of water
beach an area of the shoreline the shoreline that is made up of deposited sediment.
sandbar a submerged or partly exposed ridge of sand or coarse sediment
barrier island A long ridge of sand of sand or narrow island that lies parallel to the shore.
dune a hill or ridge of sand that is built up by the wind.
loess a special kind of soil or sediment made mostly of very fine
glacier a glacier is like a giant; slow-moving river made entirely of ice.
glacial drift is the general term for all the materials that a glacier carries and leaves behind when it moves across the land
creep the slow downhill movement of weathered rock material.
rockfall rockfall is a type of mass movement where loose rocks or boulders break away from a steep slope or cliff and tumble or fall quickly down because of gravity
landslide landslide is the movement of a large amount of rock and earth.
mudflow mudflow is a fast-moving flow of water, soil, and rock
mountain mountain is a large landform that rises prominently above its surroundings
lake a lake is a large body of water that is surrounded by land and does not flow like a river.
river a river is a large natural stream of water that flows
coastline a location where land and ocean surface meet.
