Weathering and Erosion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| weathering | the natural process by which atmospheric and environmental agents, such as wind, rain, and temperature changes, disintegrate and decompose rocks. |
| physical weathering | the mechanical breakdown of rocks into smaller pieces is caused by natural processes and does not change the chemical composition of the rocks material. |
| abrasion | the process by which rock is reduced in size by the scraping action of other rocks driven by water, wind, and gravity. |
| chemical weathering | the chemical breakdown and decomposition of rocks by natural processes in the environment. |
| oxidation | a chemical reaction in which a material combines with oxygen to form new material |
| acid precipitation | the action or process of precipitating a substance from a solution. |
| erosion | natural process where rocks, soil, and other materials are worn away and moved from one place to another by natural forces |
| deposition | the process where a substance changes from a gas directly into a solid, or where sediments are added to landforms. |
| floodplain | a flat or gently sloping area of land next to a river or stream |
| delta | a landform that forms at the mouth of a river where it meets a larger body of water |
| alluvial fan | a triangle-shaped deposit of soil and rocks that forms when a fast-moving river |
| groundwater | groundwater forms when rain or surface water seeps into the ground |
| shoreline | the boundary or edge where the land meets a body of water |
| beach | an area of the shoreline the shoreline that is made up of deposited sediment. |
| sandbar | a submerged or partly exposed ridge of sand or coarse sediment |
| barrier island | A long ridge of sand of sand or narrow island that lies parallel to the shore. |
| dune | a hill or ridge of sand that is built up by the wind. |
| loess | a special kind of soil or sediment made mostly of very fine |
| glacier | a glacier is like a giant; slow-moving river made entirely of ice. |
| glacial drift | is the general term for all the materials that a glacier carries and leaves behind when it moves across the land |
| creep | the slow downhill movement of weathered rock material. |
| rockfall | rockfall is a type of mass movement where loose rocks or boulders break away from a steep slope or cliff and tumble or fall quickly down because of gravity |
| landslide | landslide is the movement of a large amount of rock and earth. |
| mudflow | mudflow is a fast-moving flow of water, soil, and rock |
| mountain | mountain is a large landform that rises prominently above its surroundings |
| lake | a lake is a large body of water that is surrounded by land and does not flow like a river. |
| river | a river is a large natural stream of water that flows |
| coastline | a location where land and ocean surface meet. |
