TermDefinition
Social Darwinism A late 19th-century ideology that wrongly applied Charles Darwin’s biological theory of "natural selection" (evolution) to human society and politics
Socialism loyalty and devotion to one's nation, encourages imperial rivalry between states.
Sino-Japanese War Japan asserted its nationalist pride through incursions into Koren, irritating China, the conflict grew into the Sino-Japanese War. (Japan also seized Formosa).
"Civilizing Mission" Colonizers saw themselves as protectors on a "civilizing mission" rather than invaders. (A justifying reason to changing people languages, religion, culture etc. just to colonize for Imperialism).
Phrenologists People who studied skull sizes and shapes, believed that a smaller skull size proved incompetence. (NOT TRUE).
Charles Darwin "Survival of the Strongest," theory of evolution by natural selection stated that over millions of years.
Social Darwinism Thinkers adapted Darwin's biological evolution to society; Belief: Stronger races and nations were naturally destined to dominate the weaker ones. (trying to justify racism and more).
David Livingstone A missionary from Scotland, who worked in Sub-Saharan Africa to end the illegal slave trade.
East Indian Company (EIC) A powerful English joint-stock company founded in 1600 to trade in spices, tea, cotton, and silk, which eventually morphed into an imperial force from Britian to India.
Dutch East India Company (VOE) A monopoly on trade between the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa and the Straits of Magellan. Concentrated on the islands around Java replacing Portuguese.
New Imperialism Britian created a sizeable colonial empire; its colonies such as Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, also provided markets for British manufactured goods.
