What is the purpose of Description? To identify what is directly seen in the artwork.
What is subject matter? The main figure or object depicted in the artwork.
What questions relate to subject matter? Main figure, placement, relationship of other figures.
What is material in art? The physical materials used to create the artwork.
Why are materials important? They influence meaning, effect, and overall impact.
What are elements and principles? The artist’s use of visual and technical qualities.
What questions relate to elements and principles? Dominant elements, techniques, visual appeal.
What is Analysis? Understanding the artwork’s topic, structure, and value.
What does analysis reveal? The work’s organization, nature, role, and significance.
What is Interpretation? Explaining the meaning behind the artwork and artistic choices.
Interpretation: What is the subject? Identifying what the artwork depicts.
Interpretation: What is it conveying? Understanding the artwork’s message.
Interpretation: Artist’s message? Determining intended meaning.
Interpretation: Symbols? Identifying symbolic elements and their meaning.
Interpretation: Representation? Understanding broader themes or ideas.
Analysis: How was it produced? Examining technique and process.
Analysis: Did you like it? Evaluating personal response.
Analysis: Comparison? How it stacks up against similar works.
Analysis: Value? Its importance to you or society.
