Salem Witch Trials

When and where did the Salem Witch Trials take place? 1692-1693 In colonial Massachusetts.
How many people were accused and executed? 200 were accused and 20 were executed.
What social factors contributed to the Salem Witch Trials? Religion, prejudice, and tension from refugees after war with France.
What behaviors did the 1st accused girls have? Screaming fits, contortions, and threw things.
Who were the 1st 3 accused of witchcraft? Tituba, Sarah Good, and Sarah Osbourne.
What was spectral evidence and why was it controversial? Testimony about dreams and visions, it was unreliable and led to wrongful conviction.
Who helped bring spectral evidence to a stop? Cotton Mather and his father.
How did Gov. Phips respond to the criticism of the trials? He stopped arrests, and pardoned those imprisoned for witchcraft.
What resulted because of the trials? 19 were hanged, 1 man died by being pressed to death (Giles Corey), many imprisoned.
What happened in years after the trials? Public confession, apologies, and eventual exonerations.
Who was the last exonerated and when? Elizabeth Johnson Jr. July 2022.
What are some of the theories for the cause of the trials? Medical explanations like ergot poisoning and mass hysteria.
How have the trials influenced history? Serve as a symbol of paranoia and injustice.
Why did the community think that witchcraft was involved? It was the only thing doctors could think of, they had to blame someone for what was happening.
What did Tituba confess to seeing? Confessed to seeing the devil and that there were more witches in Salem.
What happened at Martha Corey's trial? The girls imitated her movements and claimed to be tormented showing marks.
After Martha Corey went to jail what happened to the girls' fits? They stopped.
Who issued the warrant for Sarah Good's arrest? John Hathorne.
What was Sarah Good accused of doing? Harming Elisabeth PAbigailarris and Williams.
When was Sarah Good hanged? July 19, 1692
What did the witnesses claim to see with Sarah Good? They saw her take "shape" and torment the girls with a yellow bird.
