ECO Human Impacts
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| climate change | Burning fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases, trapping heat, causing rising temperatures, sea levels, and extreme weather. |
| deforestation | Clearing forests for farming, logging, and development destroys habitats, reduces carbon absorption, and causes soil erosion. |
| acid rain | A harmful rain that is caused by pollution and has a low pH level |
| fossil fuels | fuels formed long ago from the remains of plants and animals |
| pollution | Releasing harmful substances into air (smog, greenhouse gases), water (chemicals, waste), and soil, damaging ecosystems and human health. |
| overharvesting & overconsumption | Excessive fishing, hunting, and use of resources deplete natural stocks. |
| biodiversity loss | Accelerating extinction rates of plants and animals. |
| habitat destruction & land use | Converting natural areas for cities, farms, and infrastructure fragments ecosystems, leading to species loss. |
| water scarcity | Depleting freshwater sources and polluting existing ones. |
| waste generation | Producing enormous amounts of household, industrial, and electronic waste that can contaminate environments. |
| *greenhouse effect | the natural process where gases in Earth’s atmosphere—such as carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor—trap heat from the sun, preventing it from escaping into space. |
