QuestionAnswer
* Referral A written order from a primary doctor for a patient to see a specialist or get a specific test.
* Phlebotomy The practice of drawing blood from a vein, usually for laboratory analysis.
* Leukocytes White blood cells (WBCs) that fight infection.
* Erythrocytes Red blood cells (RBCs) that carry oxygen.
* Plasma The liquid portion of blood (mostly water) that carries nutrients and hormones.
Thrombocytes Cell fragments that help blood clot.
* Hemoglobin The protein in RBCs that actually grabs the oxygen.
* Sickle Cell Disease A genetic disorder where RBCs become C-shaped and "sticky."
* Leukemia Cancer of the blood-forming tissues, causing too many abnormal WBCs.
* Hematocrit The percentage of blood volume that is made of RBCs.
* Anemia A lack of healthy RBCs or hemoglobin to carry oxygen.
* Polycythemia An abnormally high concentration of RBCs, making blood thick.
* Canula A thin tube inserted into a vein or body cavity to deliver or drain fluids.
* Complete Blood Count (CBC) A broad screening test for RBCs, WBCs, and platelets.
Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP Measures glucose, electrolytes, and kidney function.
Lipid Panel (Cholesterol Test) Measures cholesterol levels (HDL, LDL, and Triglycerides).
* Saturated Fat Fats that are solid at room temperature (mostly animal fats).
* Unsaturated Fat Liquid fats (oils) usually from plants.
* Hypercholesterolemia High levels of cholesterol in the blood.
* Plaque (Cholesterol) A buildup of fat and cholesterol that narrows arteries.
* Blood-borne Pathogen Microorganisms (like HIV or Hep B) carried in blood.
* Universal Precautions Treating all blood and fluids as if they are infectious.
* Brachiocephalic Vein The "Head-Arm" merger leading to the heart.
* Subclavian Vein Under the collarbone.
* Axillary Vein outer side of the arm, armpit, and upper chest back toward the heart.
* Greater Cephalic Vein The "Thumb side" (Outer arm).
* Median Cubital Vein The most common vein used for blood draws in the elbow crease.
* Basilic Vein The "Pinky side" (Inner arm).
