| Referral | The process of sending a patient to another healthcare professional or service for care or testing. |
| Phlebotomy | The practice of drawing blood from a patient for testing or donation. |
| Components of Blood | The main parts of blood: plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. |
| Leukocytes | White blood cells that help fight infection and disease. |
| Erythrocytes | Red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout the body. |
| Plasma | The liquid portion of blood that carries cells, nutrients, hormones, and waste. |
| Thrombocytes (Platelets) | Cell fragments that help blood clot and stop bleeding. |
| Hemoglobin | A protein in red blood cells that binds to oxygen and transports it. |
| Sickle Cell Disease | A genetic disorder where red blood cells are misshapen and don’t carry oxygen efficiently. |
| Leukemia | A cancer of the blood and bone marrow that affects white blood cell production. |
| Hematocrit | The percentage of blood made up of red blood cells. |
| Anemia | A condition where the blood has too few healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin. |
| Polycythemia | A condition where the body has too many red blood cells. |
| Canula | A thin tube inserted into a vein to draw blood or deliver fluids. |
| Complete Blood Count (CBC) | A blood test that measures red cells, white cells, platelets, and hemoglobin. |
| Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) | A blood test that checks electrolytes, kidney function, and blood sugar. |
| Lipid Panel (Cholesterol Test) | A blood test that measures cholesterol and triglyceride levels. |
| Saturated Fat | A type of fat that can raise LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. |
| Unsaturated Fat | A healthier fat that can help lower LDL cholesterol. |
| Hypercholesterolemia | A condition of having high cholesterol in the blood. |
| Plaque (Cholesterol) | Fatty buildup in arteries that can restrict blood flow. |
| Blood-borne Pathogen | A microorganism in blood that can cause disease. |
| Universal Precautions | Safety practices used to prevent exposure to blood and body fluids. |
| Veins of the Upper Limb | Veins in the arm that return blood to the heart. |
| Brachiocephalic Vein | A large vein that carries blood from the arm and head to the heart. |
| Subclavian Vein | A major vein under the collarbone that drains blood from the arm. |
| Axillary Vein | A vein in the armpit region that continues into the subclavian vein. |
| Greater Cephalic Vein | A large superficial vein on the outer arm used for blood draws. |
| Median Cubital Vein | A common vein in the elbow area used for venipuncture. |
| Basilic Vein | A large superficial vein on the inner arm. |
