The Progressive Age

QuestionAnswer
What did progressives argue and expect? They argued that social evils will not remedy themselves and expected the government to help solve problems.
Who and what did the new class enjoy? The new class was middle class meaning you are poor or rich and they enjoyed mass produced goods, factory made clothes, and appliances.
What did some people now have instead of working time? Some people had more free time or leisure time instead of work time.
What kind of conditions did immigrants live in? They lived in awful conditions.
What did some of the progressives try to remedy? Some tried to remedy some of the problems due to urbanization and industrialization.
What were progressive writers called? They were called Muckrakers.
Who was Upton Sinclair and what did he write about? He was a Muckraker and wrote about the horrors of of the meat packing industry.
What did people demand after reading his book? People demanded the government to make sure their food was safe.
What does the FDA stand for? The Food and Drug Administration.
Why was fixing many of the problems very hard? It was very hard because many wealthy people who were responsible for the problems wanted things to stay the same.
What were many wealthy people profiting from and didn't want to happen? Many wealthy people were profiting from the cheap labor and didn't want groups such as women and immigrants to have a say in anything.
In the cities who had great power. Political bosses like Boss Tweed in NYC ran government dishonesty and took bribes and stole money from people.
What did progressives want when it came to their leaders? Progressives wanted fair leaders.
What were trusts and monopolies doing? They were taking advantage of people.
What did political cartoons of the era show? They showed the concerns of people.
Who were most of the progressives and what did they fight for? Most of the progressives were women and fought for child labor, sweatshop conditions, and for SUFFRAGE.
What does suffrage mean? It means the right to vote.
What did the 19th Amendment allow? It gave woman the right to vote.
What outlawed full-time work for children under the age of 16? The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938.
What did the 16th Amendment grant congress the power to do? It granted congress the power to tax income.
What did the 17th Amendment provide? It provided for the direct election of US Senators.
What did the 18th Amendment prohibit? It prohibited making, selling, or transporting alcohol.
How did the 18th Amendment help the Mafia? It helped the Mafia (organized crime, gangster) to become rich.
What are other important Progressive Era reforms and movements include? It included Labor unions, NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), Food and Drug Administration (Safe Food), Compulsory + Child Labor Laws, Secret Ballot, and 8 hour work days.
When were most modern and essential thing being invented? In the Modern era between 1880 and 1920.
Who made the lightbulb? Thomas Edison did.
Who made the first recorded music? Thomas Edison did.
Who made the first mimeograph? Thomas Edison did.
Who made the first film motion picture projector? Thomas Edison did.
How much did it cost to see a short film? It cost a nickel.
Who made the electric chair? Thomas Edison did.
Who made the first commercial x-ray? Thomas Edison did.
Who made the first stock market ticker? Thomas Edison did.
Who made the first motorcycle? Dalmer did.
Who made the first modern automobile? Karl Benz did.
Who made the best selling car in America in 1910 - Model T. Ford? Henry Ford did.
What made the Model T. the best seller? The Assembly Line.
Who made the phone? Alexander Graham Bell did.
Who made the first camera for regular people? Mr. Eastman did.
What company made the first sewing machine for regular people? Singer did.
What allowed people to live in the suburbs? The first overhead trolley.
What did the high-wheeler or penny- farthing bicycle avoid. It avoided the use of chains.
When was the first safety bike made? 1885
Who made the Matzeligers Lasting Machine which put soles on shoes and what did it mean? Jan Earnst Matzeliger did and it meant no more hand sewing.
Who invented the radio? Marconi made it.
What were other new ideas? Air conditioners, airplanes, first plastics, bras, electric washing machines, and vacuum cleaners.
What did barbed wires end? They ended free range cattle and the longhorn steer.
Who developed the first vaccines for chicken cholera and rabies? Louis Pasteur developed it.
