| superego | moral principle (represents internalized morals and societal standards, the "conscious") |
| defense mechanisms | unconscious strategies the ego uses to reduce anxiety and protect a person from distressing thoughts or feelings |
| displacement | redirecting emotions from a threatening target to a safer one (yelling at a sibling after a bad day at school) |
| projection | attributing one's own unacceptable thoughts or feelings to someone else (accusing someone else of being angry when you are) |
| rationalization | creating logical excuses to justify unacceptable behavior or feelings (“I failed because the test was unfair”) |
| reaction formation | reacting in the opposite way of how you actually feel (being overly nice to someone you dislike) |
