QuestionAnswer
What is continental drift theory? The Earth continents were once joined together and slowly moved apart overtime
What are the types of evidence that support this theory? Fossils, similar rock layers, and matching landforms
What is an ocean trench? An undersea valley that represents one of the deepest parts of the ocean
What is a mid ocean ridge? An under ocean chain where new ocean floor is produced
What is subduction? The process by which oceanic crust sinks beneath a deep ocean trench and back into the mantle at a convergent plate boundary
What is a divergent boundary and what can occur there? A boundary where to tectonic plates move away or diverge from one another. Mid-ocean ridges, rift valleys, shallow earthquakes, and volcanic activity can occur.
What is a convergent boundary and what can occur there? A boundary were to tectonic plates moved together or converge. Powerful earthquakes, explosive volcanoes, and massive mountain ranges can occur.
What is a transform boundary and what can occur there? More than a dozen distinct plates that make up earth surface and slowly move in different directions. Major earthquakes, significant faulting and lateral displacement of rock can occur.
What is tension? A pulling force that stretches or pulls objects apart
What is compression? A force that pushes objects together
What is shearing? A force that causes parts of an object to slide past each other in opposite directions.
What is an earthquake and what causes it? An earthquake is the shaking of earths surface, and it is caused by the movement of tectonic plates.
What is seafloor spreading? The process where new ocean crust forms and slowly moves away from mid ocean ridges.
Compared to oceanic crust what is continental crust? Continental crust is thicker, less dense older made mostly of granite and forms continents.
Compared to continental crust what is oceanic crust? Oceanic crust is thinner, more dense younger than mostly of bass salt and forms the ocean floor.
Why does oceanic cross subduct below continental crust? Oceanic crust subducts below continental crust because it is denser

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
