Energy Unit Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| energy | the ability to do work or cause change |
| work | the transfer of energy to an object by a force that makes an object move in the direction of the force |
| kinetic energy | energy due to motion |
| potential energy | stored energy due to the interactions between objects or particles |
| gravitational potential energy | stored energy due to the interactions of objects in a gravitational field |
| elastic potential energy | energy stored in objects that are compressed or stretched, such a springs or rubber bands |
| chemical potential energy | energy released when atoms form connections |
| nuclear energy | the energy stored in and released from the nucleus of an atom |
| electric energy | the energy in an electric current |
| mechanical energy | the sum of the potential energy and the kinetic energy in a system |
| thermal energy | the sum of the kinetic energy and the potential energy of the particles that make up an object |
| wave | a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter |
| sound energy | energy carried by sound waves |
| radiant energy | energy carried by an electromagnetic wave |
| Law of Conservation of Energy | states that energy is always transferred or transforming, but energy is not created or distroyed |
| energy transfer | when energy moves from one object to another without changing form |
| energy transformation | occurs when energy is changed from one form to another |
| conduction | the transfer of thermal energy by collisions between particles of matter |
| convection | the transfer of thermal energy by the movement of particles within matter |
| radiation | the transfer of thermal energy from one material to another by electromagnetic waves |
