Critical Thinking The systematic evaluation of formulation of beliefs, or statements, by rational standards
Systematic because it involves distinct procedures and methods
Evaluation and formulation used to asses existing beliefs and devise new ones
Rational standards beliefs are judged by how well they are supported by reasons
Media literacy The ability to access and understand media messages, apply critical thinking to them, and use them responsibly
Fake news Deliberately false or misleading news stories that masquerade as truthful reporting
Confirmation bias The tendency to look for and recognize only information that confirms our existing views
Denying contrary evidence The cognitive error of refusing to accept or acknowledge evidence that undermines our existing beliefs
Availability error Relying on evidence not because it's trustworthy but because it's memorable or striking
Homophily (Homo = same) (Phila = friendship, love, affinity) The tendency to give more credence to a statement if it comes from our friends
