Corroborate To support an idea, statement, or character's point of view by giving more evidence/proof verb I use evidence to corroborate my reason.
Prevailing The idea or feeling that is the strongest adj The fact that there was a man dying was prevailing.
Indicate to pick or point out verb This will indicate if it snows tomorrow.
Tone The way authors express their personal opinions about themselves, the content, subject, and/or audience noun Her tone was aggressive and demanding.
Mood The emotions a reader feels when reading the excerpt noun Her mood was unacceptable.
Purpose The reason a text exists; it is what the author or speaker hopes to accomplish by writing the text noun His purpose for writing the text was to persuade me to like dogs.
perspective a way of thinking about and understanding something noun His perspective on dogs was that they are wonderful.
Audience Those who actively engage the texts, interpret the texts according to their own knowledge and experiences, and use the text to accomplish their own purposes. noun The audience of the presentation was the class.
Expository Techniques The elements an author uses that focus on central idea, provide evidence and examples, and present logical conclusions noun He used expository techniques to support his reason.
Stylistic of or concerning style adj The stylistic works were magnificent.
Closure a sense of resolution or conclusion noun He knew the end was near because of a sense of closure.
Suspense a feeling of anxious curiosity that often builds during the rising action of a story noun The cliffhanger created a lot of suspense.
Adaptation a story or work that is based on an older story, they often include changes in the orignal noun There are many adaptations of the Little Red Riding Hood.
Parenthetical Citations Brief references within the text that provide readers with the source of information in parenthesis noun The source in the parenthetical citations was from national geographic.
Prefix Uni-(unify) make or become united prefix George Washington would unify the states.
Root -mittere- (Emitting) Act of sending or discharging something into the air root The factory was emitting harmful elements into the air.
Blight Something that spoils; prevents growth or spoils noun The blight spoiled the can of beans.
Maladies illnesses or diseases noun The maladies were spreading across the island.
Puzzled confused and unable to understand adj The maze made him puzzled.
Stricken very badly affected by trouble or sound adj The boy was stricken by fear because of the strange figure.
Stillness absence of sound noun Their was an odd stillness in the room.
Deserted abandoned or empty adj The deserted island had no resources.
Emissions the release, discharge or sending out of something into the air or environment noun The coal plant sent out unhealthy emissions into the atmosphere.
Emit to produce and discharge something verb Cars should not emit unhealthy substances.
Activist A person who campaigns to bring about political or social change noun The activist led a protest throughout the city.
