Unit 4 ELA Vocab

Vocabulary WordPart of SpeechDefinition of WordSentence Using Word
Corroborate Verb To support an idea, statement, or character's point of view by givingmore evidence or proof. I decided to corroborate by claim more because it wasn't very persuasive yet.
Prevailing Adjective The idea or feeling that is the strongest. My idea of eating pizza was prevailing because I was hungry.
Indicate Verb To pick or point out. Bob's oral presentation was incorrect so I wanted to indicate it after he finished presenting.
Tone Noun The way authors express their personal opinions about themselves, the content, subject, and/or the audience. The tone in that book was very negative.
Mood Noun The emotions; a reader feels when reading the excerpt. My mood after reading that book has significantly changed.
Purpose Noun The reason the text exists. It is what the author or speaker hopes to accomplish by writing the text. I feel like there is no purpose for this book to exist because it's bad.
Perspective Noun A way of thinking about and understanding something. The book didn't change my perspective about food at all.
Audience Noun Those who actively engage with texts, interpret the texts according to their own knowledge and experiences, and use the texts to accomplish their own purposes. There was a big audience at the show.
Expository Techniques Noun The elements an author uses that focus on central idea, provide evidence and examples, and present logical conclusions (ex.: facts, statistics, testimony, text, data, main ideas, etc.). If I don;'t use expository techniques on my essay, I'll fail.
Stylistic Adjective Of or concerning style (usually used when discussing elements in writing, similar to techniques). My poem was stylistic, considering it was about random things.
Closure Noun A sense of resolution or conclusion. I need a good closure to my argumentative essay if I want people to follow what I said.
Suspense Noun A feeling of anxious curiosity, it often builds during the Rising Action of a story. The movie had suspense buliding up every second of it.
Adaptation Noun A story or work that is based on an older story, they often include changes to the original story. I need to include adaptation to that book or it will be plagiarim.
Parenthetical Citations Noun Citations are brief references within the text that provide readers with the source of the information. Parenthetical means the information is included in parenthesis ( ). If I don't include parenthetical citations for the definitions of these words, no one will understand what I am saying.
Works Cited Noun A Works Cited page is a list at the end of paper or text that shows allthe sources that were used to find the information. It gives credit to the authors and helps readers know where the facts came from. My Works Cited page is very short because I only used 2 sources.
Blight Noun Something, that spoils, prevents growth, or destroys. The park blight the amazing fall sunset.
Maladies Noun Illnesses or diseases. The maladies in Africa used to be very dangerous.
Puzzled Adjective Confused and unable to understand something. I was very puzzled during today's math lesson.
Stricken Adjective Very badly affected by trouble or illness. I was stricken by my fever that I didn't go to school for whole week.
Stillness Noun Absense of noise or motion. Astronauts say that the stillness of space is disturbing.
Deserted Adjective Abandoned; empty. The old park was deserted, as a new one got build yesterday.
Emissions Noun The release, discharge, or sending out of something into the air or environment. Greenhouse gasses are emissions sent into the atmosphere.
Emit Verb To produce and discharge something. I don't know if it's true that cow burps emit methane.
Activist Noun A person who campaigns to bring about political or social change. Martin Luther King Jr. was a famous activist.
Latin Prefix: uni- on; single Word using uni-: Unicycle A cycle with a single wheel, typically used by acrobats. The clown at the circius was juggling red balls while riding his unicycle.
Latin Root: -mittere- to send out; release Word using -mittere-: Permit Give authorization or consent to (someone) to do something. I was not allowed to permit strangers to my party.
