Meosis Chromosome mutations
| How can mutations arise | These can arise by chromosome non disjunction during meosis |
| What is a non disjunction | This is when the chromosomes or chromatids do not split equally during anaphase |
| Non disjunction can occur in 2 forms | Changes in whole sets of chromosomes (polypoidy) Changes in the individual number of chromosomes (Aneuploidy) |
| What does polypoidy mean | This means that changes in whole sets of chromosomes occur when organisms have 3 or more sets of chromosomes rather than 2 This usally occurs in plants |
| What does it mean by Aneuploidy | Sometimes individual homologous pairs of chromosomes fail to seperatae during meosis This results in gamete having one more or fewer chromosme |
| On fertilisation with a gamete that has the normal number of chromosomes the reultant zygote will have more or fewer chromosomes than normal in all their body cells |
