Basic words words we use daily
Technical words known as domain
domain specific words specific subjects such as math and science
Context clues looking at the way words are used in a combination with other words in the same setting
Comparison look for clues that indicate an unfamiliar word is similar to a familiar word of phrase
Contrast look for clues that indicate an unfamiliar word is opposite in meaning to a familiar word or phrase
definition/restatement look for words that define the term or restate it another way
Example look for examples used in context that reveal the meaning of an unfamiliar word
Root the base element of the word that contains its basic meaning
Prefix a word element that is placed in front of a root and changes the words meaning an makes a new word
Suffix a word element that is placed after the root
Dictionary either in print or electronic form, provides word meanings, origins, pronunciations, and more
Glossary like a dictionary in that it gives word definitions, but these words may be in a special field or subject
Thesaurus provides lists of synonyms and antonyms for words
Etymology word origin
Figurative language not meant to be taken seriously
Euphemism involves using mild words instead of possibly offensive or unpleasant terms to describe something
Oxymoron two or more words that combine opposite or contradictory ideas
Connotation emotional associations
Denotation literal meanings
Nuances subtle shades of meaning
Inference a guess about what each word means
