Walls and Openings
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Type X | treated gypsum board with fire resistant properties, slowing the frame. Each layer adds and hour's worth of resistance when rating a wall |
| Backbend | The framing members on either side of the throat, which aids in connecting the frame to the wall |
| Chase Wall | wall constructed to conceal plumbing, 12" for fixtures on one side and 16" for fixtures on both sides |
| Cripple Stud | Shortened stud to support openings between top plate/header, and bottom plate/sill |
| Double Rabbet | Door frame with two rabbets separated by a stop |
| Double Top Plate | Two layers of nominal boards along top of a stud wall to join studs and support ceiling joists |
| Face | The portion of the frame that is visible on either side of the opening, acts as the trim |
| Acoustical Partition | Interior partition that features layers of sound batt to diminish noise transfer from one room to another |
| Bearing Wall | A wall that supports the weight of the roof and upper levels. Removal requires alternative support. Exterior walls and certain interior walls are load-bearing |
| Casing | The exposed trim around a window or door, typically made of wood, metal, aluminum, or plastic |
| Frame | The assembly around a rough opening for a door or window that includes the jamb and header |
| Greenboard | Treated gypsum board that has water-resistant properties. Should not be used alone and should be used under a layer of tiles. |
| Gypsum Wallboard | Stacked element comprised of a gypsum between layers of paper facing used as a surface material for walls and ceilings. Can take on various properties, such as water- or fire-resistance. |
| Head | horizontal framework member that extends between studs to support the structure above to form an opening. Top of door or window |
| Header Beam | directly below the top plate and extends between studs to support the structure above to form an opening. Created by rotating studs so that the widest dimension is parallel with the wall frame. |
| Header Plate | extends between king studs in a rough opening to support the structure above |
| Jack Stud | Shortened stud along the sides of openings. These studs are anchored to the king stud and help transfer weight from the header to the sole plate. |
| Jamb | The vertical members of a frame for a window or door. |
| Knockout | A hole cut in a steel stud |
| Nested Double Joint | Extends between king studs in a rough opening to support the structure above. Made of three steel channels, one to accept the cripple studs above and two interlocking channels below to support the weight |
| Nested Header Plate | Stacking three steel channels where lower two channels face each other, with flanges overlapping, creating a hollow, rectangular shape. The third channel rests above the nested components, facing upward to support the cripple studs above |
| Nonbearing wall | Does not bear weight |
| Partition | Wall that acts as a space divider and does not bear the weight |
| Rabbet | groove or cut that creates a joint or space where another piece can fit into it |
| Rated Partition | wall constructed with fire-rated materials spanning from slab-to-slab |
| Rough Opening | Opening created in the wall to allow for doors or windows to be placed. 2" wider and taller than the door or window |
| Shim Space | 1/4"- 1/2" gap created between a structural component and a finishing element to aid in the leveling process. |
| Shim | A wood or metal strip used to aid in leveling plates |
| Sill | horizontal at the bottom of an elevated opening |
| Soffit | Perpendicular edge to the stop on a door frame. Can have single or double rabbet |
| Sole Plate | Bottom of a stud wall. Acts as a support for floor joists (AKA sill plate) |
| Steel channel | C-shaped metal runner |
| Stop | provide a closing point between the elements of doorway |
| Stud | Vertical framing mill cut to specific size |
