| aquifer | an underground layer of permeable rock, sediment, or soil that contains water |

| permeable | a layer that allows water to move through the material |
| impermeable | a layer that does not allow water to move through the material |
| pollution | the process of making land, air, and water dirty and not suitable to use |
| fertilizer | a chemical or natural substance added to soil or land to increase its fertility |
| tributary | a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger one |
| watershed boundary | the outer edge dividing one watershed from another |
| drainage basin | the area of land where all water flows into a specific river or lake |
| point source pollution | pollution that comes from a single, identifiable source |
| non point source pollution | pollution that comes from many different sources |
