Building Words

TermDefinition
Mono-, uni- One — Unilateral: affecting one side of the body
Bi- Two — Bilateral: affecting both sides
Tri- Three — Tricuspid: having three points or cusps
Ab- Away from — Abduction: movement away from the body
Ad- Toward — Adduction: movement toward the body
Ecto-, exo- Outside — Exoskeleton: outer covering
Endo- Within — Endoscopy: viewing inside the body
Epi- Upon or above — Epidermis: outer layer of skin
Anterior (ventral) Front — chest is anterior to the spine
Posterior (dorsal) Back — spine is posterior to the chest
Superior Above — head is superior to the neck
Inferior Below — stomach is inferior to the heart
Lateral oward the side — arms are lateral to the chest
Distal Farther from point of attachment — fingers are distal to the wrist
Proximal Closer to point of attachment — shoulder is proximal to the elbow
Ambi- Both — Ambidextrous: able to use both hands
Dys- Abnormal or painful — Dyspnea: difficult breathing
Eu- Normal or good — Euphoria: feeling of well-being
Homo- Same — Homogeneous: same type
Iso- Equal — Isotonic: equal concentration
Mal- Bad or poor — Malnutrition: poor nutrition
-algia Pain — Neuralgia: nerve pain
-emia Blood condition — Anemia: low red blood cells
-itis Inflammation — Arthritis: joint inflammation
-lysis Breakdown — Hemolysis: breakdown of red blood cells
-oid Resembling — Steroid: hormone-like substance
-opathy Disease — Neuropathy: nerve disease
-pnea Breathing — Apnea: absence of breathing
-centesis Surgical puncture — Amniocentesis: puncture of amniotic sac
-ectomy Surgical removal — Appendectomy: removal of appendix
-ostomy Surgical opening — Colostomy: opening of colon
-otomy Incision — Tracheotomy: incision into trachea
-orrhaphy Suturing — Herniorrhaphy: hernia repair
-opexy Fixation — Gastropexy: fixation of stomach
-oplasty Surgical repair — Rhinoplasty: nose repair
-otripsy Crushing — Lithotripsy: stone crushing
