Reproductive System

Human reproductive system

TermDefinition
Testes (testis = singular) Male reproductive organs that produce sperm and testosterone.
Epididymis  A coiled tube where sperm mature and are stored.
Fallopian tubes (oviducts) Tubes that transport the egg from the ovary to the uterus; fertilisation usually occurs here
Seminal vesicle Glands that produce a fluid rich in sugars that provides energy for sperm.
Prostate gland A gland that produces fluid that helps nourish and transport sperm.
Urethra A tube that carries urine and, in males, semen out of the body.
Scrotum A pouch of skin that holds and protects the testes and regulates their temperature.
Bulbourethral glands Small glands that produce a clear fluid that lubricates the urethra and helps protect sperm during ejaculation.
Cervix The lower, narrow part of the uterus that opens into the vagina.
Vas (ductus) deferens A muscular tube that transports mature sperm from the epididymis to the urethra.
Endometrium The lining of the uterus that thickens to support a pregnancy.
Fimbriae Finger‑like projections at the end of the fallopian tubes that help guide the released egg into the tube.
Ovaries Female reproductive organs that produce eggs and hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone.
Penis The external male reproductive organ that delivers sperm.
Seminiferous tubules Tiny tubes inside the testes where sperm are produced.
Uterus A muscular organ where a fertilised egg implants and a baby develops.
Vagina A muscular canal that receives the penis during intercourse and serves as the birth canal.
Vulva The external female genital area, including the labia and clitoris.
Ejactulatory duct Duct for transporting semen (sperm + glandular secretions)
Myometrium Outer layer of the uterus, consisting of thick layers of smooth muscle. Stretches during pregnancy and contracts during labour.
Clitoris Organ of sexual arousal
Labia majora The outer folds of skin that protect the external female genital area.
Labia minora The inner folds of skin that protect the vaginal opening and urethra.
