Referral When a doctor sends a patient to another provider or for a test.
Phlebotomy The process of drawing blood from a vein.
Canula (Cannula) : A small tube placed into a vein to allow fluids or blood to be drawn.
Plasma Liquid part of blood; carries nutrients, hormones, and waste.
Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells) Carry oxygen.
Leukocytes (White Blood Cells) Fight infection.
Thrombocytes (Platelets): Help blood clot.
Hemoglobin: Protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.
Hematocrit Percentage of red blood cells in blood.
Anemia: : Low red blood cells or hemoglobin → causes tiredness.
Polycythemia Too many red blood cells → blood becomes thick.
Sickle Cell Disease Genetic disease where red blood cells are sickle-shaped and don’t carry oxygen well.
Leukemia: Cancer of the blood and bone marrow that affects white blood cells
Complete Blood Count (CBC): Measures red cells, white cells, platelets, hemoglobin, and hematocrit.
Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP): Measures sugar, electrolytes, and kidney function.
Lipid Panel (Cholesterol Test) Measures cholesterol and fats in the blood.
Saturated Fat “Unhealthy” fat; raises cholesterol (butter, fried food).
“Unhealthy” fat; raises cholesterol (butter, fried food). Healthy” fat; helps heart health (nuts, fish)
Hypercholesterolemia High cholesterol in the blood.
Plaque (Cholesterol) Fatty buildup in arteries that can block blood flow.
Blood-borne Pathogen: Germs carried in blood (like viruses).
Universal Precautions Safety rules assuming all blood is infectious (gloves, handwashing)
Brachiocephalic Vein: : Formed by joining major veins near the chest.
Subclavian Vein: Runs under the collarbone.
Axillary Vein Found in the armpit area.
Greater Cephalic Vein : Runs along the thumb side of the arm.
Median Cubital Vein Median Cubital Vein
Basilic Vein Runs along the pinky side of the arm
