What are Standards? (CARS) Expands on regulatory text, second digit is "2".
How many subdivisions are CARS divided into? 9
What are the 9 subdivisions? Gen prov, airc iden & reg & op of leased airc by a nonregistered owner, aerod, airp, helip, pers licensing and train, airworthiness, gen op & flt rules , com air serv, air nav serv, repeals and coming into force
How often does CFS get a new version? What are the subdivisions? 56 days, general, aerodrome, directory, planning, radio nav & com, military, emergency
What is the TSB Transportation Safety Board. Responsible for investigating all transportation occurrences in Canada, including Canadian or non-Canadian registered aircall. Investigators are on a 24-hour standby. Military and Cadets, directorial of flight safety (DFS)
What are the Nav Canada Services? ATC planning. Area Con Centers (ACC): 7 in Can. ATC Towers, Flt Serv Stat (FSS): Advisory servs, winds, weather, runway cond, Flt Info Centre( FIC): Flt planning services, emergency services Com Aerodrome Radio Stations (CARS): Contracted Services (N)
IFR? Instrument Flight Rules. Rules for flying in reference to instruments on flight
VFR? Visual Flight Rules. Rules applying in reference to the visuals of the ground
SVFR? Special Visual Flight Rules. Rules for weather incidences that are less than VFR within a control zone.
Ceiling The lowest height at which a broken or overcast condition exists, or the vertical visibility when an obscured condition such as snow, smoke, or fog exists; the lowest layer
Visibility The ability, as determined by atmospheric conditions and expressed in units of distance, to see and identify prominent unlighted objects by day and prominent lighted objects by night
Flight Visibility The average range of visibility at any given time forward from the cockpit of an aircraft in flight
Ground Visibility The visibility at an aerodrome as contained in a weather observation reported by an ATC unit, Flight Service Station (FSS) or AWOS
Civil Twilight Usually defined as when the centre of the sun’s disc is less than 6o below the horizon
What should each student/pilot track? Pers log W: Date, type airc & reg mark, flt crew pos, flt cond W resp to day, night, VFR, & IFR (gliders cant fly at nt or IFR so it is assumed it is VFR unl othws note), flttime & airtime, Gliders - meth launch, aerop- dep & ariv, interm take-off & lan
ATC Clearance Authorization by an ATC unit for an aircraft to proceed within controlled airspace under specific conditions. Once accepted by the pilot, the clearance shall be complied with.
ATC Instruction A directive issued by an ATC unit for the ATC purposes. Pilots shall comply with ATC instructions.
Series of green flashes, steady green (ON GROUND) Cleared to taxi, clear for takeoff
Series of red flashes, steady red (ON GROUND) Taxi isnt cleared or landing area in use, stop
Flashing white, blinking runway lights (ON GROUND) return to starting point, vehicles and pedestrians are to vacate runway
Series of green flashes, steady green (IN AIR) return to landing, clear for landing
Series of red flashes, steady red (IN AIR) airport unsafe, give way to other aircraft and keep circling
Firing of a red pyrotechnical light Do not land for the time being (At location with military control towers only)
Fuselage construction types Truss (beams or tubes joined together - longerones), monoque (ovalshaped bulkers w stressed skin surrounding) semimonque ( added stringers), composite (more common, aerodynamic, less maintenance, expensive, many materials.
Propulsion system Engine, propellors, cowling (covers engine), engine mounts, firewall
Chord and MAC An imaginary line from leading edge to trailing edge. Mean/average of the chord
Span Distance from tip to tip (across both wings)
Aspect ratio The relationship between the length/span of the wing and its width/chord Aspect ratio = span/MAC how much lift and drag is created Wings with higher aspect ratios generate more lift and less drag than wings with a low aspect ratio gliders = high
Angle of incidence The angle at which the wing is permanently inclined to the longitudinal axis of the airplane Affects flight visibility, takeoff, and landing characteristics and the amount of drag created during level flight
Angle of Attack The angle at which the airfoil meets the relative airflow (PG 13)
Ailerons control.. roll, longitudinal axis
Pitch Lateral
Rudders control.. yaw, vertical
