QuestionAnswer
Nucleus The nucleus lies at the center of the atom, which is made up of protons and neutrons. The nucleus makes up most of the mass of the atom.
Proton The positively charged particle found in the nucleus of the atom
Neutron The particle found in the nucleus of the atom which carries a neutral or no charge
Electron The negatively charged particle found in the electron cloud that continuously orbits the nucleus of the atom
Electron cloud The space surrounding the atom where the electrons orbit the nucleus. Most of the volume of the atom is made up of the electron cloud.
Atomic number Identifies the # of protons an atom has in its nucleus. all normal atoms have the same number of protons and electrons. The atomic number tells you the # of electrons. The atomic number can be found in the upper left hand corner of each Cell.
Atomic symbol Located at the center of the cell block. It is an abbreviation for the element name.
Element name Name of each element. Located under the atomic symbol in each cell.
Atomic mass Identifies the amount of matter contained in the atom. The value for atomic mass is located at the bottom of each cell block. The notation for atomic mass is called atomic mass units or (AMU.)
Mass number The mass number is the sum of the number of protons and the number of neutrons. It can be calculated by rounding the atomic mass to the nearest whole number.
Isotope Two or more atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons different number of neutrons
What is the smallest part of all matter? The smallest part of all matter is an atom
Why haven’t scientist been able to study atoms directly? Scientist, haven’t been able to study atoms directly because Atoms are extremely small
What is the current model of an atom called? The current model of an atom is called the Quantum Mechanical Model (sometimes called the Electron Cloud Model).
What are the three basic parts of an atom? The three basic parts of an atom are Protons, Neutrons & Electrons
What electrical charges do the 3 basic parts of an atom have? The electrical charges of the three basic parts of an atom are: Protons = Positive charge Neutrons = No charge (neutral) Electrons = Negative charge
Where are the basic parts of an atom found? Protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus (center of the atom). Electrons are found in the electron cloud around the nucleus.
Where is most of the mass of an atom found? Most of the mass of an atom is found in the nucleus because protons and neutrons are much heavier than electrons.
What part of an atom takes up most of its space The electron cloud takes up most of the atom’s space.
How are all atoms of the same kind of matter similar All atoms of the same kind of matter are similar because All atoms of the same element have the same number of protons.
What is the atomic number of an atom? The atomic number of an atom is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
How do the number of protons and electrons compare in a normal atom? In a normal atom, the number of protons equals the number of electrons.
If silver has 47 protons, how many electrons does it have? Silver has 47 electrons
If carbon has 6 protons, how many electrons does it have? Carbon has 6 electrons
If sodium has 11 protons How many electrons does it have sodium has 11 electrons
If neon has 10 protons, how many electrons does it have? Neon has 10 electrons
If iodine has 53 protons, how many electrons does it have? Iodine has 53 electrons
Why are atoms said to be electrically neutral? Atoms are electrically neutral because the positive charges from protons equal the negative charges from electrons, so they balance out.
Which element has the atomic number 2 The element with the atomic number 2 is Helium
Which element has the atomic number 20 The element with the atomic number 20 is Calcium
How do you calculate the mass number of an atom, You calculate the mass # of an atom by: rounding the atomic mass to the nearest whole number.
How do you calculate the # of Neutrons in an atom To calculate the number of neutrons in an atom, use the following formula. Mass #= # of Protons + # of Neutrons
