TermDefinition
Adjuvant analgesics Third category of drugs thats primary purpose is not generally used or prescribed for pain
Cordotomy the surgical division of one or more of the lateral nerve pathways emerging from the spinal cord; and the removal of any causative factor
Endorphin neurotransmitters produced by the pituitary gland and hypothalamus in response to pain or stress
Enkephalin neurotransmitters that act as natural painkillers
Intrathecal delivers medication directly into the cerebrospinal fluid in the spinal canal
Neuromodulator a chemical or substance that regulates nerve activity, either naturally
Neuropathic pain/tissue pain derives from damage to tissues rather than nerves and is experienced mostly in the back, legs, and arms
Neurotomy the dissection or division of a nerve
Neurotransmitter endogenous chemical messengers that transmit signals across a synapse from one neuron to another, or to muscle/gland cells
Nociceptive pain the most common type of pain
Nonopioid pain management medication that doesn't carry the risk of addiction. includes acetaminophen and NSAIDs
Opioid pain releiver medication that can be addictive and reduce pain by binding to receptors in the brain, spinal cord, and organs, which reduces the intensity of pain signals
Prostaglandins cause pain when they irritate nerve endings
