| Allusion | A brief reference to a well-known person, place, event, story, or piece of art that the author expects the reader to recognize. |
| Juxtaposition | When the author places two ideas, characters, or images next to each other to highlight their differences or similarities. |
| Imagery | Descriptive language that appeals to the reader's senses ( sight, sound, smell, taste, or touch) to help form a picture. |
| Anaphora | The repetition or the same word or phrase at the beginning of several sentences to emphasize an idea. |
| Extended metaphor | A comparison between two unlike things that continues over several lines or throughout a text. |
| Foreshadowing | A technique in which an author gives clues about something that will happen later in the story. |
| Subplot | A minor plot that relates in some way to the major plot. |
| Motif | An element that reoccurs in stories. It's a theme or pattern that recurs in a work. |
| Suspense | A device authors use to create a mental uncertainty accompanied by anxiety or excitement. |

| Flashback | An interruption in the story to take the reader back to earlier times and events. |
| Unreliable Narrator | A narrator who can't be trusted. Their story is not completely accurate or credible due to problems with the character's mental state or maturity. |
| Symbolism | An ordinary object which has an extended meaning. |
| Irony | The difference between what we expect to happen, and what actually does happen. This adds suspense and interest to the story. |
| Verbal Irony | When a character says something that is the opposite of what he/she actually means. |
| Situational Irony | Something takes place that a character orr reader does not expect to happen. |
| Dramatic Irony | When the reader/audience knows something that the character in the story, on the screen, or on the stage does not know. |
