| thesis statement | A thesis statement is a clear, concise sentence or two in an essay that summarizes the main point |
| claim/topic sentence | A claim or topic sentence is a statement that expresses the main idea or argument of a paragraph |
| lead-in | A lead-in in an essay is the opening sentence or paragraph that captures the reader’s attention |
| Evidence | your claim or thesis by providing facts or credible information. |
| Explanation | explanation is to clearly and logically conveying information about a topic to help the reader understand it |
| Citation | A citation in an essay is a reference or acknowledgment of a source of information, giving proper credit to the original author. |
| In-text citation | Brief references within the essay text, often including the author's last name and publication year, page number |
| Transition Word | a word or phrase that connects ideas smoothly between sentences or paragraphs, helping the essay |
| Summary | An overview that captures the author’s main idea, thesis, and supporting points in your own words |
