Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) Family centered-not only addresses the needs of the individual child who has a disability, but also focuses on the child's family by specifying which services the family needs to enhance the child's development.
Resilient Families Units that utilize collective strengths, resources, and adaptive strategies to withstand, recover from, and grow through adversity, such as trauma or chronic stress
Wraparound Service Systems Using not only educational services but also available community services to meet the individualized needs of children and their families.
Family Systems Theory Understanding the individual's behavior in the context of the family and understanding the family's behavior in the context of other social systems.
Family Characteristics Basic information about the family, such as the type and severity of the disability, the family's size, cultural background,. Determine how family members interact.
Work-Family Conflict Situations in which the demands of work interfere with the demands of the family or vice versa.
Family Interactions Reflect family cohesion and adaptability, important determinants of the "health" of a family.
Cohesion The degree to which an individual family member is free to act independently of other family members.
Adaptability The degree which families are able to change their modes of interactions when they encounter unusual or stressful situations.
Family Life Cycle The emotional and intellectual stages a family experiences from childhood through retirement, representing the progression from independence to partnering, raising children, and the senior years
Guardianship One person has authority, granted by the courts, to make decisions for another person.
Social Support Emotional, informational, or material aid that is provided to individuals in need.
Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) Focuses on the child's behavior as a way to relieve stressful relations in the family.
Family Activity Settings Routines that families engage in, such as mealtimes, seasonal celebrations, visits to relative, shopping, going on vacations, and eating in restaurants.
Relaxation Response The body's natural opposite to the stress (fight-or-flight) response, a deep physical and mental calm triggered by specific techniques like meditation, leading to slower heart rate, lower blood pressure, and a balanced nervous system.
Mindfulness-Based Positive Behavior Support (MBPBS) An evidence-based, dual-component framework combining mindfulness training with Positive Behavior Support (PBS) to reduce caregiver stress and manage challenging behaviors in individuals with disabilities.
Traveling Notebooks Go back and forth between school and home, are less formal than home notes and are particularly appropriate for students who see multiple professionals.
Due Process Hearing A noncount proceeding held before an impartial hearing officer.
