Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) Written plans that outline early intervention services and supports for infants or toddlers with developmental delays and their families.
Resilient Families Families that can adapt, cope, and recover positively from stress, challenges, or crises.
Family-centered model An approach to services that focuses on the family’s strengths, needs, and involvement in decision-making.
Wraparound service systems Coordinated support services that work together to meet a family’s comprehensive and individualized needs.
Family systems theory A theory that views the family as an interconnected system where each member’s actions affect the whole family.
Family characteristics The traits, structures, values, and patterns that define how a family functions.
Work-family conflict Stress or tension that occurs when work and family responsibilities interfere with each other.
Family Interactions The ways family members communicate, relate to, and behave toward one another.
Family Functions The roles and activities a family performs to support, care for, and socialize its members.
Guardianship A legal relationship where a person (the guardian) is appointed to make decisions for someone who cannot make decisions for themselves.
Social support Help, care, and encouragement received from family, friends, or the community.
Mindfullness interventions Practices or programs that teach focused awareness and present-moment attention to reduce stress and improve well-being.
Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) A program that teaches parents strategies to manage their child’s behavior through positive reinforcement and consistent discipline.
Family activity settings Environments or contexts where families engage in shared routines, play, or everyday activities together.
Relaxation response A physical state of deep rest that reduces stress and counteracts the body’s “fight-or-flight” reaction.
Mindfulness-based positive behavior support (MBPBS) A program combining mindfulness practices with positive behavior strategies to help caregivers reduce stress and support better behavior in children or individuals.
Traveling Notebooks Journals or notebooks that move between family members, students, or participants to share thoughts, experiences, or information.
Due process hearing A formal legal proceeding to resolve disputes, often about special education or parental rights, ensuring fair treatment under the law.
